The Commander-in-Chief, officers and men of the American Forces of Liberation in the Pacific wish their gallant allies, the people of the Philippines, all the blessings of Christmas and the realization of their fervent hopes for the New Year. Christmas 1944.

Jenny touched words she recognized with her fingertip and tried to read the leaflet: American, wish, blessings of Christmas, hopes for the New Year, and Christmas 1944. The American Army had come to wish them a Merry Christmas!

She rolled the leaflet in her hand and ran back to her shanty. “Mummy! Mummy!”

“Yes, honey?” Her mother said. She continued setting the table without turning around.

“Mummy! It’s Santa! Santa came!”

Her mother paused. She held on to the plate she was laying down at one of the seats. “Sweetheart, I told you last night. Santa isn’t real.”

“But Mummy, he is real. I saw him in the sky just now.” Jenny held out the leaflet in her hand. “See. He brought you a present.”

Her mother sighed and turned around. She opened her mouth to speak, but her eyes fell to the message Jenny was holding and she frowned. “What? . . .”

Jenny gave her the leaflet. Her mother read it and looked up. Trembling, she slapped her hand over mouth. “Oh my God! It’s the first words we’ve gotten from them in years.”

“I told you.” Jenny lifted her chin. “Santa did come.”

A wide grin spread across her mother’s face. “Yes.” She wrapped her arms around Jenny. “Yes. Santa came.”

Jenny returned her mother’s hug. “We have to tell Daddy.” She let go of her mother and shouted, “Daddy! Daddy!”

Her father came out from his room. “What’s all this excitement?”

“Santa Claus came,” her mother said, beaming. “He gave us this.” She handed him the leaflet. Her father read it and broke into a smile.

“So we were wrong. Santa is real after all.” He put his arms around his wife and daughter. “Merry Christmas!”
